The Plot:

Meanwhile, brutal and monstrous forces are gathering on the horizon, intent on enslaving the world. To defeat them, Celaena must find the strength to fight her inner demons but to battle the evil that is about to be unleashed.

My Thoughts:
I believe the word "unputdownable" is all that needs to be said about this book. Magic and fantasy are at the forefront of this action packed sequel.

"She was the heir of ash and fire, and the would bow to no one."

Heir of Fire is undoubtably one of the best fantasy books I've ever read. You think you know Celaena from the first two books but you're wrong.
In this book we see a broken child, relentlessly blaming herself for the deaths of her loved ones. She is basically an emptiness, for her to lose the swagger and to fully embrace her pain, regret and self-loathing she kept hidden for so long the things etched into her memories.
And those memories are gruesome. Finally we can see what happened ten years ago, how she became Celaena Sardothien. by facing all that grief and darkness, she's able to step into the role of a leader; far more powerful and deadly than any can imagine.

"You didn't need a weapon at all when you are born one."

I have to applauded Ms Maas on her character development. It was phenomenal. Her new experiences make her stronger, wise, more determined. Her fierceness was inspiring and her sassy self was still there but dwindling. Not as dramatic as before but she's still the brave young woman. Yet she's not proud of who she is, what she's become and what she's done. That doesn't mean that she isn't ready to throw herself into battle and win back her kingdom.

"It would not take a monster to destroy a monster - but light, light to drive out darkness."

I wasn't sure how the different perspectives would work now that Celaena is in Wendlyn whilst the others were still in Adarlan. But it did. I stayed connected and felt like I knew more about Dorien and Chaol now that Celaena doesn't smother them.
Also some new characters were introduced. The first being Manon; an iron-teethed witch.
Initially, I disliked her as a character but as the book developed and I knew more about her and her life I started to enjoy her so much. She's like an immortal, slightly bitchy Celaena.

"Witches didn't need blood to survive, but humans didn't need wine, either."

Rowan Whitethorn, you are a beautiful fae. Can I have him in my life please? He started off as this moody, brooding figure and then slowly developed into this brilliant companion.

"Gods, he was brilliant. Cunning and wicked and brilliant. Even he beat the hell out of her. Every. Damn. Day."

He is the ultimate alpha-male, with kick-ass moves that even Celaena can't beat. Him being around her created this new humbler character. Together they are amazing.

"You don't bite the women of other males."

The atmosphere is a lot darker and far more intense. The pace is thrilling, allowing time to breath between each near death experience or epic battle. And the world-building was so amazing because I know so much more about the world. Seeing new places like Wendlyn, Doranelle and the Ferien Gap really helped me picture the world further.

The plot was action packed and contained several twists that I did not expect. I feel that this was so much better than Crown of Midnight (which was amazing, don't get me wrong) and it is an amazing third book.
