Review | Allegiant, by Veronica Roth

22:34
What You Need To Know:

Title: Allegiant
Author: Veronica Roth
Number of Pages: 526
Genres: Romance, Science Fiction, Young Adult, Post Apocalyptic, Dystopian
Publisher: Harper Collins
Published: 22nd October, 2013

The Plot:

The faction-based society that Tris Prior and the rest of the people in the city have grown used to has been shattered - fractured by violent power struggles and scarred from the loss and betrayal that they have felt. But to make it worse, some else has been revealed to the people in the City. There is a world beyond the fences. Thinking that she and Tobias Eaton can find a simple new life together, free from the painful memories that the city holds.

But it appears that this new reality is even more alarming than the one they left behind. It turns out that being divergent is something to crave. Human nature is a complex thing; more complex than anyone could imagine. And through all of that, Tris has to continue making impossible decisions about courage, allegiance, sacrifice and love,

My Thoughts:

This book is a disappointment. Divergent I liked, Insurgent okay. But this was awful. I feel that in order to write this, Veronica had to rush. There are a thousand and one plot holes and all the character development went out the window. Oh and don't even get me started on the varying points of view. Every single bloody chapter switches between Tris and Tobias. Why do this? All the previous books have been told from Tris' point of view. We liked her so why the sudden change. Yes a lot of people understand why and I'm not going to spoil it for the people who have been living under a rock and have no clue what I'm talking about. But it would have been easier to just end it there instead of that crappy ending.

It took me almost two weeks to read this book and it's only 526 pages long. Usually I could read that in a week or maybe even less. It was because of the awfulness of this book that it took me so long. I knew that it was going to be bad, I've read a lot of reviews and been told by a lot of people how bad it is and they were not wrong. Maybe it's because of the hype of the series that I ended up being disappointed like the thousands of other readers. But the ending was bad. It was your typical yet not typical cheesy ending. The book was bad. After the shocking ending of Insurgent I had really high hopes but it was a real disappointment.

I really can't say much else about this book which is really annoying because I wanted to go into good detail about it; I'm trying to take reviewing more seriously and go into detail about it. But this was so bad that I can't really do anything. That makes me sad.

Ratings:

So if you haven't already guessed, I disliked this book a lot. It was a bad way to end the series and was actually really poorly written. That's why I'm giving it: **

Reading Slumps

21:05
The worst thing has struck once again. Something that can kill a geeky girl such as I. It's hell to be sat in the middle of the summer holidays, with a lot of stressful work that can only be dealt with the excess of free time given to me, not being able to do one of the things that I love. Yes, I have fallen into a reading slump.

Every reader knows that voice deep inside them that ushers them to read certain things. The same voice that allows them to go to such beautiful and magnificent places that are described in the very books we adore. But it is an evil being. Just like mother nature, it will suddenly just stand up and yell, 'NOPE!'. Sometimes these dreaded slumps can last for months on end and it is a horrible thing. I don't want to be left in that same old situation where my brain is slowly destroying itself because it isn't being allowed to imagine wonderful places such as Hogwarts or the Shire.

Since I am in this very position at the moment, I have been reading the same book for over a week; forcing myself to read it. Before that, whilst I was on holiday, I couldn't finish any of the seven books I took on holiday with me when the year before I read the six I took with me and four of the ten more I bought whilst away. It's an awful feeling. Why must it hit whilst I am on holiday, why not in my chaotic school year?????

Anyway, I went slightly off topic then, since I am in this position myself I thought that maybe I should share some of my cures for getting rid of reading slumps.

Stop reading.
I know, the one thing you want to do right now is read that book that is in front of you. But stop. You obviously don't really want to read because your brain isn't letting you. So instead, do something else. It could be anything. You could be write, binge watch something on Netflix, go outside (**gasp**), knit, eat. Do anything you want so that you're brain can go onto other things. Personally I suggest watching Walking Dead or Pretty Little Liars. The latter I got into this summer because of my slump and it is helping, slightly.

Reorganise.
I don't know about anyone else, but I find a great pleasure in spending an endless amount of hours stripping my bookshelves and then taking forever in deciding how you want the books to sit, what you want where. I find it really therapeutic. It lets me clear my mind, something that I plan to do later this week.

Switch it up.
Why not try reading a new genre. I love sci-fi books, there's something about them that I love. But the last time I was in a reading slump I decided to grab a book from a genre that I could never get into (contemporary) and that has become one of my favourite books of all time. It got me out of that dreaded slump so maybe it could help someone else.

Go back to an old favourite.
This always helps me. Put down the book you're reading and go back to an old favourite, something that will remind you why you love to read. I am going to pick up one of my all time favourites, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. I know that going back to Hogwarts will help me get my brain through this evil state.

A quick fix may help.
Why not try picking up some tiny books, whether these are novellas or graphic novels it shouldn't matter because they will help get you out of the slump. Little words are always good when your brain decides to turn into a vegetable.

Listen.
This can go one of two ways. Either grab an audiobook and listen to someone else's dulcet tones as they read to you. Then your brain doesn't need to do anything except imagine. Or, you could put on some movie soundtracks to take you to a world you love. Something that can really get the imagination section of your brain working.

Though I have mentioned only a few points, I think that they should help any poor unfortunate souls. like myself, who find themselves stuck in a dreaded reading slump.

But I want to know, how do you get over your reading slump?

Review | Hollow City, by Ransom Riggs

10:20
What You Need To Know:

Title: Hollow City
Author: Ransom Riggs
Number of Pages: 396
Genres: Fantasy, Mystery, Supernatural, Young Adult
Publisher: Quirk Books
Published: 14th January, 2014

The Plot:

Jacob is still in the past, but he isn't stuck there. He wants to be there, to help all the peculiar children that his Grandad knew. And that's why he is stuck in 1940 in the middle of the war and in the middle of an ocean.

Having escaped Miss Peregrine's island by the skin of their teeth, Jacob and his friends have been forced to travel to London; the peculiar capital of the world. Along the way, they encounter new allies, a menagerie of peculiar animals, and other unexpected surprises.

My Thoughts:

Upon reading this book, I looked at several reviews on goodreads. Some people loved it and some people hated it. Some saying that it was suffering from Second Book Syndrome whilst others argued that it was better than the original. I had no idea how I would feel walking into this book; whether I would love it or hate it. But I did walk into with an open mind.

For the first few pages I thought that it probably was suffering with Second Book Syndrome. The book opened and it was rather dull, I found myself skim reading quite a few pages. It was just a bit dull. But the Tales of the Peculiar really interested me. Mr Riggs if you feel like writing this Tale of the Peculiar just for me then I would be very happy. But if you didn't want to write then you really don't have a choice ... no offence but I really need it in my life.

As the book developed, there was something about it that intrigued me more than the first book in the series. There was something about the combination of the vintage photographs and the writing that was so much better than the first book. I don't know what it was but they were like a Symbian circle that complimented each other. It was a lot better than the first one because of it. Back then, Ransom Riggs was trying to create a world with so many characters for us so he had to get these strange photographs that would represent these people. However, the photographs in this book only emphasised the world and they seemed to create a whole new state of imagination for me. I was now able to read it and completely imagine the world. It was wonderful.

The ending was something that I really did not expect. As the book progressed I was constantly wondering how this book was going to end. It got close to the end of the book, like twenty pages away, and it wasn't anywhere near an ending so I was like ... what! And then a few chapters before the ending something happened and I just sat there staring at the book like WHAT THE HELL!!!!!

And then the actual ending to the book, it was completely brilliant. There was something about that that I found really interesting. It was nice to know that Jacob was becoming more and more important in that world.

Oh and the menagerie of animals section was such an amazing section. There was something that I had never considered. Peculiar animals. It made me chuckle to see such strange animals which people may have considered to be true.

Rating:

Overall I think I would give this book ****. It was good but not completely brilliant.

Review | The Selection, by Kiera Cass

16:10
What You Need To Know:

Title: The Selection
Author: Kiera Cass
Number of Pages: 336
Genres: Young Adult, Dystopian, Science Fiction, Romance, Fantasy, Chick Lit, Fiction
Publisher: HarperTeen
Published: 24th April, 2012

The Plot:

The Selection is the chance of a lifetime for thirty-five girls in order to escape the life laid out for them at birth. They have the chance to be swept up into a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon. It sounds like every girls dream.

But it isn't America Singer's dream; in fact being Selected is a nightmare. It means that she has to abandon her family, her future and the man she loves.

Yet everything changes as soon as she meets Prince Maxon. He's different than he seems. As time goes on she begins to question all her future plans and that perhaps the life that she has dreamed of will never compare to a future she never imagined.

My Thoughts:

I didn't know how I'd feel about this book because I'm not usually into Chick Lit but there was something about this book which I found really appealing. There was something about the characters in the book that I connected with and I had a moment when I wanted to sit down and finish the book. However I didn't own a copy of the Elite at the time so I didn't want to finish the book because then I wouldn't have been able to continue with the next season. It annoyed me.

But I still finished the book and it was beautiful and I love it so much. America is such a nice character and I have to say that I completely fell in love with her. Oh I need a Maxon in my life too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will someone become my Maxon please?????????/

I can't really say a lot because it will spoil the book but it was beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rating:

I think you'll understand why I am giving this book *****

Harry Potter Spells Tag

10:58
I am obsessed with Harry Potter. Like literally obsessed. I have probably read the series over one hundred times! You should probably know that by now if you have been reading my blog for a long time. I thought that it would be a good idea to do the Harry Potter Spells Tag ... even though I haven't been tagged to do it but who cares! Let's just do the questions .....

1) Expecto Patronum - a childhood book connected to good memories
One book that links with my childhood has got to be the Hobbit. There are a lot of books that I could mention, Harry Potter included, but the Hobbit is the one thing which I can truly link to my childhood. My dad used to sit down with me at night and we would read one chapter a night and I can remember his different voices for the Dwarves and the Trolls. It was beautiful. Even now when I read these chapters, I still hear his voice in my head. It really is one of my fondest memories and if that hadn't happened then I doubt whether I would be like this. An insane fangirls who is releasing her mad thoughts about book and other geek related things to the internet; i'd probably wouldn't be me.

2) Expelliarmus - a book that took you by surprise
I didn't think that I'd like The Selection, by Kiera Cass as much as I do. It is so beautifully written and so addictive; I literally couldn't put it down. I just loved the whole as the series in a general.

3) Prior Incantato - the last book you read
I read The Selection by Kiera Cass. This book surprised me. I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I do but I did and I am literally sat in the middle of my rehearsal screaming at some of the things going on. Not actually screaming, internally though I think I did squeak a tiny bit. My review will be up soon, I promise! But it was so good and I need to talk to someone about it!

4) Alohamora - a book that introduced you to a genre you hadn't considered before
For me this has to be Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Before I read Fangirl I didn't like the sound of contemporary reads. When I read I liked to visit new worlds not something that could happen in the house next door. I preferred to read sci-fi and fantasy books. But I thought that I'd give Fangirl a bash and now I'm suddenly obsessed with  anything and everything related to contemporary. I'm glad that that happened because it means that I'm reader a far diverse range of works; something that I really enjoy.

5) Riddikulus - a funny book you've read
This was one of my favourite books from my childhood and it still makes me chuckle today; All American Girl, by Meg Cabot. It's just really funny and I love it so much!!!!!!!!

6) Sonorous - a book you think everyone should know about
I think everyone should read Fire City by Bali Rai. Bali is an amazing writer who I have had the privilege of meeting several times. He is a very talented author and this is probably one of my favourite books of his. It is set in a demon riddled world and it is so beautifully written and I have to say that it is one of my favourite books I've ever read!

7) Obliviate - a book or spoiler you would like to forget having read
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix ... Sirius Black. Need I say anymore!

8) Imperio - a book you had to read for school
All the books I have read at school I liked quite a lot. I'm an English Literature student so I always do like what I read. Except for one. Spies by Michael Frayn. It is the worst book I've ever read and I had to recreate the writing style for some coursework and it was hell!

9) Crucio - a book that was painful to read
Her by Harriet Lane was a very painful read for me. It was so dull! And I found myself almost falling asleep as I read it. It was so dull and I wish that I could have loved it but it was rather awful!

10) Avada Kedavra - a book that could kill (interpret as you will)
A Game of Thrones. Those feels throughout literally kill me with every time I turn the pages of my book!!!!!!!!

Belated Birthday Book Haul

10:43

Almost three weeks ago, on the 5th of June it was my birthday (YAY I'VE SURVIVED SEVENTEEN YEARS!!!!!!!) and I got a fair few books as presents. I bought myself some book related things too and I got some other random stuff. So I thought that I would do a birthday book haul slash all my other presents.

First things first the books that I got for my birthday …….

West End Girls, by Jenny Colgan. Allegedly the streets of London are paved with gold so it is the perfect place for complete opposite twin sisters Lizzie and Penny Berry to move to in order to get noticed. Randomly the two discover that they have a wealthy grandmother who lives in the centre of Chelsea who is currently staying in hospital. However during their time flat-sitting the two discover that the West End lads are nothing like Hugh Grant.

Hollow City, by Ransom Riggs. Beginning immediately after the first book, Jacob and his friends are forced to travel to London in the middle of the war in order to save Miss Peregrine. There they encounter new  allies, a menagerie of peculiar and also some new enemies.

Horns, by Joe Hill. The last year Ignatius Perrish has spent the year in a purgatory of sorts after the death of his beloved Merrin Williams. Merrin was raped and murdered in the middle of the woods and everyone in his small town believes that Ig is to blame. Almost a year later, Ig wakes up to discover that he has horns sprouting out of the top of his head. These horns provide Ig with a terrible power which might finally allow him to discover who killed Merrin and destroyed his wife.

Attachments, by Rainbow Rowell. It’s 1990 and the internet is a fairly recent thing. Within a printing company Lincoln O’Neill has been employed to monitor people’s emails to ensure that they aren’t doing anything inappropriate. Everyone in the News Room knows that this was happening but no one actually knew who this guy was. Lincoln suddenly comes across the emails between Beth Fremont and Jennifer Scribner-Snyder and whilst he reads their enjoyable conversation he discovers that he might be falling in love with one of them. But is there such a thing as love before sight?

The Night Circus, by Erin Mogenstern. The circus will arrive with no warning and only open at night. But the Circus is really a battle ground between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, and only one of them will be triumphant. However, the two of them have fallen headfirst into a deep and magical love that caused the room to heat up with they come in contact with each other. But their love does not matter for their fate has been set out before them and only one of them can complete it.

Anna and the French Kiss, by Stephanie Perkins. Anna is supposed to be spending her senior year in Atlanta with a great job, a loyal best friend and the possibility of a crush becoming something more. However that all changes when she is shipped off to a boarding school in Paris and she is far from thrilled; until Etienne St. Clair comes into her life. But he has everything that he could possibly want … including an equally perfect girlfriend. But they do live in the City of Light so perhaps something could come true. So there probably is the option that the year could end with a long-awaited French Kiss.

All My Friends Are Superheroes - Andrew Kaufman. All Tom’s friends are superheroes; in fact he even married one called the Perfectionist. But at their wedding, the Perfectionist is hypnotised by her ex-boyfriend Hypno to believe that Tom has abandoned her. In her grief she moves to Vancouver, never knowing that Tom is beside her and he has until the plane touches down to convince her that Tom is visible before he loses her forever.

All I Know Now - Carrie Hope Fletcher. This is a guide to survive the ‘teenage’ which can be a dangerous and bumpy road meaning that even the best people will need help at some point. Whether it is about love, friendship, school or the future; this book will help no matter what.

I was given some money too so I bought myself a few books, when I say a few I mean 9 (soon to be 12!)

The Elite, The One and The Heir, all by Kiera Cass. When a Prince comes off age in the land of Illea, thirty five girls are selected from around the country to take part in the selection. A chance to escape their birth lives and to become the Princess of the land. All they have to do is get Prince Maxon to fall in love with them. However, this is a nightmare for America Singer as she has to leave her secret love Aspen as well as her home in order to compete for a crown that she doesn’t actually want. Oh and she has to live in a palace that is constantly under threat from violent rebel attacks. But it seems that Maxon might be able to change her mind; perhaps this competition might begin to mean more?

Hush, Hush; Crescendo and Silence, all by Becca Fitzpatrick.  Romance was never a part of Nora Grey’s plan. She wasn’t particularly pretty so she couldn’t attract boys in school and to be honest she wasn’t really bothered. That is until she meets Patch. His easy smile and eyes that seem to stare at her very soul draw her closer to Patch; even though her brain is telling her not to. However after a series of terrifying events, Nora doesn’t know who to trust. Patch seems to be where ever he is and knows more about her friends that even she. She has no idea whether to run to his arms or hide in the corner. Suddenly Nora finds herself in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortals and those who have fallen. But when she has to choose sides, the wrong choice could cost Nora her life!

Atlantis Gene, Atlantis World, Atlantis Plague, all by A.G. Riddle. High-tech artefacts are found in an area that was believed to be from ancient Atlantis. This discovery causes one global organisation to violently accelerate the next step in human evolution.

Cress, by Marissa Meyer. Cinder and Captain Thorne are still on the run from the law; but Scarlet and Wolf are now in tow. The quartet now have a plan; overthrow Queen Levana and her bloody thirsty army. They have one person who can help them is Cress, an excellent hacker who has spent her life living on a satellite. Cinder needs her help, as does Levana; each to find the other. Cress, Scarlet and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world; but they may be the only hope that the world has.

Dorothy Must Die, by Danielle Paige. Amy Gumm is a normal teenage girl; that is until a tornado swept her up and transported her to Oz. But Oz is different to what she knows from the books and films. Good Witches can’t be trusted, Wicked Witches might actually be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed if they attempt to rebel. The yellow brick road is still there – but it’s crumbling away. Dorothy is a tyrannical leader and Amy is who Oz needs to go back to normal.

Half Bad, by Sally Green. Nathan has lived in a cage for sixteen years: beaten, shackled, trained to kill. In modern day England, witches live amongst humans but Nathan is an abomination to his people. He is the illegitimate son of Marcus; the most powerful and cruellest witch in the world. Before his 17th birthday, Nathan must escape the cage and received three gifts from his father or he will die.

I also bought myself a Daenerys Targaryen Pop Funko figure and four Hobbit bookmarks.

So I have a bit of an addiction which is not good at all! But what am I going to do about it; there are worse things to be addicted to; right! So that was my belated birthday book haul.

Review | Scarlet, by Marissa Meyer

10:35

What You Need To Know:

Title: Scarlet
Author: Marissa Meyer
Number of Pages: 454
Genres: Young Adult, Romance, Science Fiction, Dystopian, Modern Fairy Tale
Publisher: Macmillan Publishers
Published: 5th February, 2013

The Plot:

Scarlet Benoit is a young girl who lives with her grandmother on a farm in Rieux, France. Her grandmother suddenly goes missing and as soon as the police announce that they could not discover where she had gone, Scarlet goes on a dangerous mission in order to find her. Before leaving she meets a street fighter called Wolf who agrees to help her find her grandmother since he has information that will lead them to France. Wolf tells Scarlet one thing about her grandmother's kidnappers, they have taken her in order to discover information about the lost Princess Selena of Lunar.

Meanwhile, Cinder is still in New Shanghai prison waiting to be taken back up to Lunar where she will be executed. That is until she gets a new arm and suddenly she is able to escape. With the help of another prisoner called Thorne, Cinder escapes and is searching for Scarlet's grandmother too in order to find out more about Selena.

But things are not going to be as easy as they appear and Cinder has to act quickly in order to ensure that Emperor Kai's life is safe before she reveals her big secret to the rest of the world.

My Thoughts:

I loved Cinder. It was such a good book. There was something about the idea of Cinderella being a Cyborg that I loved. It was completely different to anything else I had heard of and it made me really excited to read the book. This book did not disappoint.

Scarlet is obviously based on Little Red Riding Hood. She has red hair and wears a red hood, yep that is definitely Red Riding Hood. Not to mention that the her supporting character is called Wolf. Yep! But the change in it is rather interesting and what Wolf is actually amazes me!

Meyer has a really unique writing style. Even though it is set in the third person .... I think ... it is set in the third person isn't it. I think it is ... why am I doubting myself? Anyway, she has a unique sense of third person as it made it seem like it was Cinder's or Scarlet's point of view. That was brilliant. It was almost like I was watching a film. I was able to see the characters and picture everything that was going on. I haven't had a book like that for ages. Her writing style was not too descriptive that it become boring but there wasn't so little that I was unable to picture anything. It was a brilliant combination. I could visualise the area and the characters as well as being able to put my own spin on the characters. I love that style of book.

The chapters were't too long or too short so I was able to read several in a row. This meant that I got through the book really really quickly. Which was good because I really wanted to read it but I also wanted to savour the book so I finished it a bit too quickly for my liking. That disappointed me because now I need to order Cress and then impatiently wait for Winter. Although I could also get Fairest too. I'm an impatient person!

I may have slightly fallen in love with Wolf too! Now I love Kai and Wolf and I don't know who I love more. Though I probably have to say that I love Kai the most. He is the one I fell in love with originally  so you can understand why I still love him. I feel so sorry for him and .... i'm really going off topic now. Sorry.

My Rating:

Can you tell that I loved this book. I NEED TO READ CRESS!!!!!!!!!!! That's why I'd give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Review | The Queen of Zombie Hearts, by Gena Showalter

15:48
What You Need To Know:

Title: The Queen of Zombie Hearts
Author: Gena Showalter
Number of Pages: 459
Genres: Young Adult, Paranormal, Romance, Fairy Tale, Horror, Modern Fairy Tale, Retelling of a Fairy
Publisher: Harlequin
Published: 30th September, 2014

The Plot:

Everything seems to be fine in Ali Bell's life for the first time in many months. She is back in a comfortable relationship with her boy friend, Cole. She's finally keeping on top off her school work whilst still spending her nights hunting.

This isn't the type of hunting that most people would think. This is the hunting of vile creatures none only in legends. Zombies. Zombies killed her sister and her parents all those months ago and since then Ali has joined forces with a seemingly bad crowd (who are know some of her closest friends) to kill them each night.

Not too long ago, Ali had a beast living inside her. This was a creature of Zombie blood who attempted to destroy her, yet with the use of the fire that the hunters contain they were able to destroy this Zombie Alice. And they were also able to defeat the leader of a group of scientists who want to use the zombies to combat diseases. Meaning that they want to kill all the hunters.

In this moment of calm, a storm suddenly hits and Alice's world is once again turned upside down. Not only are many lives endangered but Alice discovers something new about herself that has altered her life completely.

Her family might not be her family.

My Thoughts:

I've heard good things about this book and I have been enjoying the series so I thought why not read this book and wait for several long months until the next book comes out. I loved the first book, but the second book was a tiny bit annoying if I'm honest! It was really really really slow. The final part of the book was really good but it was so dull in parts, I literally wanted to curl up in the corner of the room and go to sleep. It was so dull. So I had mixed emotions when it came to this book. I knew that I was either going to love it or hate it!

Up until the final few chapters of this book, I thought this book was brilliant. I really enjoyed how fast past it was. I think it was in the first twenty or so pages which completely hooked me. It was so bloody amazing. There really was something about Showalter's writing at the start of this book, I was able to just connect with it. And when certain events took place I was literally terrified to turn the page just incase someone died. Also by this point I have completely fallen in love with all the characters so I was ready to complete bloody murder if someone endangered one of babies!

Also the cover was so beautiful. I love all the covers (although the Alice on the cover is nothing like I think Alice should look like so that has obviously annoyed the living hell out of me!) because of the sheer difference of them. There is just something about them which really attracts my attention. It might be the grey, ornate picture frame with images that can seem fairly disturbing when you look at it for a long period of time.

However, the book went down hill drastically. There was a point when it should have just ended because the rest of the book was written so poorly that I wanted to cry. If Showalter had ended the book before then it would have been a brilliant cliff hanger which would make me cry and scream and beg for the next book to be out. But she didn't. It was literally written like a poor fanfic. We all know them, hell some of us may have written our own share until we understood grammar and punctuation, as well as tone and pace. It felt like she had to write it in 24 hours and included something that could have taken over a hundred pages to complete in about 10. It really really really pissed me off! If she hadn't done that then I would have given this book at least four stars ... hell probably even five but no she had to go a ruin it at the end!

Rating:

So I did love this book but small things annoyed me and the ending just pissed me off. I mean a ten year old could have written that better! It was bad!!!!!!!!! So that's why I had to give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️
It could have been worse. If I hadn't loved the rest of the book then from the ending alone I would have given it a one or two!

11 Facts About Me:

1) My name is Alisha and I'm British. I live near Birmingham, which is the second city of England. I wasn't born here, I was born in a place called Milton Keynes. But I moved here just before my second birthday.

2) I'm turning 17 on the 5th June and I'm really glad because it means that people are going to take me seriously for once! I'm a fairly mature person and yet people (cough cough parents cough cough) still treat like an immature baby! So hopefully that will change after my birthday

3) Books have helped me, no saved me. I was a victim to bullying when I was younger and I had some hard times. Books, mainly the fictional worlds they hold, helped me get through that. Books and one other thing,

4) Performing is the other thing. I'm a musical theatre performer and I love it, it allows me to be some else. I've mentioned it before how it allows me to suddenly become confident as I am a different person. When the bullying that I suffered was exceedingly bad, to be able to become some else for an hour or two was a blessing. Not to mention the fact that I was able to connect with other people who may be in similar situations to myself and then I'm able to create such good friendships .... sorry that was a bit of a deepish rant ... don't know where that came from!

5) In my almost 17 years on this earth, I have had almost 300 pets. Yep. I don't know the exact amount but I've definitely had over 200. No, I don't live on a zoo. I just come from a family that happen to be quite animal loving.

6) I am attempting to teach myself Sindarin, the language of the Sindar Elves from The Lord of the Rings. I say attempting, it isn't going very well and I've been learning for almost two years now. Oh dear ....

7) I know the basics of four languages (not including English and Sindarin) because I went to a language school up until last september. These languages are: French, German, Mandarin and Latin. I dropped German, Mandarin and Latin, though I really wish that I hadn't. I also did Spanish and Italian for a few months after school too.

8) My first ever fandom was The Lord of The Rings/The Hobbit. These were the first ever books that my dad read to me when I was a baby and I can still remember him doing his awesome voices for the different characters. I was about two when this happened.

9) The first ever proper book I read to myself was Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and I read this to myself when I was three and ever since then I have been obsessed with the series. I've read the individual books at least over a hundred times. Especially the Philosopher's Stone which I just read every so often because why the hell not! You can tell from their condition.

10) I have never been in a relationship (with a real life person, fictional boys don't count). Never even been asked out by anyone. Yep. Not even one of those childish one day relationships that don't even count, Nope. Maybe that's why I depend on fictional guys ........

11) I have known what I've wanted to do since I was a really little kid. When I went to see my first show and decided that I wanted to perform. I was like three years old. So that show is the reason why I am me. That and the books. How strange that these simple things have consumed my life and made me me.

Questions from Helen:

1) Who's your book boyfriend/girlfriend? There are so many that I could pick. But I think that I am going to have to pick either Legolas from The Lord of the Rings or Levi from Fangirl.

2) Books that got you into reading? The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien since it was the first proper book my dad read to me as a baby and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as it was the first book I read to myself as a little kid.

3) Favourite bookstore? Waterstones.

4) Cheapest and most expensive book you've ever bought? I remember buying a book a few years ago for 1p (it was at a car boot sale and it was basically brand new so why the hell not! Whilst the most expensive book was about £15 pounds and it was a limited edition book that I bought for a realitive a few years ago.

5) Favourite reading weather? I love it when it rains and I can curl up and listen to the water on my window!

6) First review you ever posted on your blog?  My first review was on the Drownibg of Arthur Braxton by Caroline Smailes.

7) Do you plan out TBRs? I'd like to say yes because I really want to but I don't, I try to but it really doesn't work!

8) Do you have any posters from the books you've read or their movie adaptations? No. I used to but I don't put posters up anymore. I'm really boring like that.

9) Do you read many books at the same period of time or one at time? This really depends on me at the time. If I can't get into one book then I will probably start reading another one and keep trying to go back to the original book. Also if it's a really long book then i'll read more than one. But usually I'll just read one at a time.

10) Ebooks or Physical Copies? Physical books.

11) Favourite book EVER? The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien (for the reason listed in the first question).

Questions from Rhian:

1) What is your all time favourite book? That's actually fairly easy for me to answer. Because it is the book that got me into reading. This book means the world to me and this book is The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. Need I say anything else????

2) Who is your favourite author? Tolkien has to be my favourite author because he created Middle Earth but I have to say that J K Rowling is a close second!

3) Pristine or damaged book? This depends on the book. If I am buying a book that is very old and is already second hand then I quite like it damaged because it shows how loved the book is. However, I like my own books, ones that I bought brand new, to be in pristine condition because I like to know that I have looked after them.

4) Is cracking the spine of a book acceptable in your eyes? In a hardback book yes! In a paperback book, maybe depends on the book and the size and how much I like the book.

5) Favourite snack to eat when reading? Either chocolate (white chocolate usually), some flavoured popcorn or an assortment of biscuits. Oh and a cup of tea or mug of hot chocolate!

6) What is your most favourite genre and your most hated genre? I think distopian is my favourite genre, especially post apocalyptic distopian books. They are so catching and usually full of suspense. Whilst the genre that I hate has the be Christian fiction, I just can't get into it and I'm a Christian myself!

7) Favourite weather for reading? Adding to the question earlier I love stormy weather to read in. With all the low rumbles of thunder and the flashes of lightning, it really creates a mood when I read and it is perfect when their is a battle going on. It's like my own personal symphony for the scene.

8) Do you like complete silence when reading or do you like some music or the television on etc? This really depends on me and the book I'm reading. Some books I like to have a bit of music playing off of spotify - usually one of the chill playlists. Other times I might be reading in the same room as my parents are watching telly so I don't mind listening to the telly whilst I read. But, occasionally, there is a time when I just want to sit in silence and allow myself to be completely consumed by the book. And they are my favourite reading moments, when I completely forget about the rest of the world and just live somewhere else for a few hours.

9) Favourite book to movie adaptation? Obviously I am going to have to mention the Hobbit here because I love all three of the films but I'm going to mention something that people might think I'm crazy for doing. City of Bones. Loads of people hated this movie but I really enjoyed it. Yes it took me forever to read the book and I'm attempting to reread it now which isn't working. But the series is good and I really enjoyed the film. The cast was amazing and the acting was really good. But it gets so much hate. Yes  some things are different but at least it stays true to the book compared to a different trilogy which is completely different and the acting is appalling in it yet people adore it **cough cough divergent cough cough**

10) Ebooks or physical copies? Physical copies.

11) Why did you start your blog? I wanted to give my opinions to the world about books and stuff like that. And I thought that this would be a good way to do it :)

My Questions for my Nominees:

1) Who is your favourite book villain?
2) Least favourite book to movie adaptation?
3) How often do you buy books?
4) Do you prefer to shop online or shop in a book shop?
5) Favourite place to read?
6) What is the longest book you have ever read?
7) First fandom?
8) Reading or writing?
9) Favourite book you have read this year so far?
10) How many physical books do you own?
11) One character that you would like to meet in real life and why?

Review | A Court of Thorns and Roses, by Sarah J. Maas

09:06
What You Need To Know:

Title: A Court of Thorns and Roses
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Number of Pages: 432
Genres: Romance, Fantasy, Mythological, Fairy Tales, Action, Adventure, Retelling of a Fairy Tale.
Publisher: Bloomsbury
Published: 5th May, 2015

The Plot:

The world that Feyre lives in is a dark world that was once ruled by the High Fae and the faeries; humans were enslaved and killed for fun. Until the war. Now humanity is free to live on one half of the world whilst the faeries live on the other half. An invisible wall dividing the two; keeping the humans safe from the past.

Feyre has always feared the forest that she has to hunt in in order to feed her family; so that she can survive. This winter animals are scarce and Feyre is forced to travel deeper in forest than she has ever had to before. There she finds a deer, large enough to feed her family for weeks. However, she discovers that there is a wolf also watching her prey. So, she kills it with an ash arrow.

All seems fair and for the first time in many years, nineteen year old Feyre has extra money to spend on what she would like. But none of that can last.

The next day, the door to their cottage is destroyed and Feyre is taken away from her home into the Faerie realm. Who would have thought that some one who was once poor would live in a the house of a High Fae; would be treated so kindly even after she killed one of their own.

Days turn in weeks, weeks turn into months and something begins to happen to Feyre that she never thought possible. Tamlin; the High Fae of the Spring Court; the one who took her from her home to undertake her punishment; the one she has fallen in love with.

But there is something else in this realm of beauty that Feyre does not know and before long, the twisted evil that she has been whispered through the mortal realm will finally be realised to her. And it seems that Feyre is the only hope.

My Thoughts:

I wasn't sure about this book when I started it, I haven't read the Throne of Glass series yet so I had no idea what Sarah J. Maas' writing style was like, so I was nervous. Not to mention the fact that the first page of the book did not grip me (don't kill me for saying that). The blurb wasn't actually that intriguing either, but my friend told me to stick with it so I did.

Once I got a few more pages in it was fine, I was able to really get into it. Like once I got to the wold bit I was like, 'this is actually really really really good'. And as soon as I really got into it, I couldn't put it down!!!!!! I wasn't very well the day after I started it so that meant I was able to finish the book really really really quickly. Like I probably read it in six and a half hours! It was so good. I really felt sorry for Feyre and Tamlin. Not to mention how in  love I was with Tamlin, still am .... can I marry him please??? Screw Feyre I want the High Fae of the Spring Court!!!!!!!! He's mine Feyre!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I apologise, I get a bit protective over the fictional men/faeries/any fictional hottie that exists. Oh, and I absolutely hated 'Her'. I'm not going to tell you who her is because that would be a major spoiler but I hate her for so many things .... you will shortly find out what I mean!!!!!

Can I mention the cover too. I have to say that I was a little but confused at what it was going on about. But as the book progressed it started to make sense and I did have a real OMG moment! It wasn't until I was like three quarters of my way through the book but it did make sense. Also it is such a beautiful cover! The dark red background and the girl (Feyre) over the top. It really was such a pretty cover. I have to admit that beautiful covers are my weakness, even if the plot doesn't sound to great as long as the cover is pretty then I will likely buy the book.

There is one final thing that I want to mention, I think, though I'm not one hundred percent sure, this book is based on Beauty and the Beast. A young girl forced to live with another, one who disguised himself as a hideous beast when they first met. It turns out that he has a curse upon him and the two begin to develop feelings for each other ...... see what I'm getting out, it's Beauty and the Beast.

Rating:

Although I didn't think I would, I absolutely loved this book. I hope she is doing a sequel, I think it is going to be a part of a new trilogy but I'm not sure. Sarah J. Maas, please please please make a sequel for me!

And that's why I have to give this book **** (I want to give it a half but I don't know how to! So this one has had 4 1/2 stars!

Review | Alice Through the Zombie Glass, by Gena Showalter

13:53
What You Need To Know:

Title: Alice Through the Zombie Glass
Author: Gena Showalter
Number of Pages: 476
Genre: Romance, Young Adult, Fairy Tale, Paranormal, Retelling of a Fairy Tale, Modern Fairy Tale. Horror
Publisher: MIRA Ink
Published: 7th February, 2014

The Plot:

This is the second book in the White Rabbit Chronicles and although all seemed well before, life could never be that simple not for someone like Alice Bell; a teenage slayer of zombiesthat only a few could actually see.

Everything seems fine, momentarily. Alice is living in the house ... no mansion ... that belongs to one of her closest friends and is spending as much time with her boy friend, Cole, as she can. Everything seems perfect. But that couldn't last.

Two new slayers joined group, Veronica (one of Cole's ex's) and Gavin. And just like when Cole and Ali first made eye contact they share a vision of an apparent affair between Gavin and Ali. And so Cole breaks up with her, knowing that the vision will come true; not wanting to get hurt.

But the two of them can't keep away from each other, the attraction is too great. Although they are don't want to get hurt, the two keep getting closer and closer. But something else is holding them back.

Then, something happens to Ali. A fellow slayer, Justin, was bit in the middle of the battle and he bits Ali. Since then, things have been strange. Ali has these urges, urges to devour flesh so that she can eat souls. Ali is turning into a Zombie. Through a mirror she begins to see changes, a second spirit in her body. A Zombie Alice wants to take over and turn her into the exact thing that she hates.

On top of that, there is a mole in the group. Someone who they trust is feeding information to a group who think that the zombies are needed in this world. A group who has decided to destroy the slayers. This mole knows what has happened to Alice and that so, once again, Alice has become a target.

For these lunatics believe that Alice will be able to cure one close to the leader of their group and these lunatics will do anything and everything to ensure that they get Alice.

My Thoughts:

I'm in love with this series. They are so interesting and completely different to anything else out there. I love it. Showalter is such an awesome writer, although there are moments in this book (like the previous one) that I found rather dull. At times there's so much action and it's amazing and then it just sort of flops like a limp fish.

I am still in love with Cole and I do occasionally want to destroy Ali so that I can have Cole. But I am now slightly in love with Gavin, even if he is a humungous he-slut. Why do you do this to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It really isn't fair, why do I fall in love with all these fictional men???

The beginning of this book took some time to get into, nothing really happened and I was tempted to just give up on it. But I thought, no I shall read this book! I am glad that I did that because the second part of the book was .... wow!

It wasn't like a fifty fifty divide but the start with Cole and Ali breaking up and Ali mopping over the fact that she was alone and in love with him still. I, personally, found that really really boring. But then Ali got bit and from then on things started to pick up, although some parts still bored me. But later on I could not put the book down, it really annoys me.

The second part of the book is definitely the best thing, it barely took me any time to read it because I couldn't put the book down. It was awesome. I love it!

Can't really think of anything else as I'll likely repeat myself as the things that annoy me in this book are basically the same as the things that annoyed me in the last book.

Rating:

And that's why I have given this book ***

Review | Alice in Zombieland, by Gena Showalter

What You Need To Know:

Title: Alice In Zombieland
Author: Gena Showalter
Number of Pages: 256
Genres: Romance, Young Adult, Fairy Tale, Paranormal, Retelling of a Fairy Tale, Modern Fairy Tale, Horror.
Publisher: Sourcebooks
Published: 1st June, 2012

The Plot:

Alice Bell is someone how appears to be an ordinary teenage girl. Except for the fact that her father won't let her do anything outside after dusk and he patrols the house at night with a gun. But, hey, all families are weird right? Wrong. Ali's family are far stranger.

On the night of Ali's birthday - something that her parents have forgotten .... again ... - she is finally able to convince her dad to leave the house in order to see her little sister in her latest recital.

That was a big mistake.

On there way home, during the dead of night, Ali and her family are involved in a horrible car crash. Her mother was ripped to shreds, her father thrown through the window and her sister's neck twisted like an Owl's all the way round. But Ali was left unharmed. It was in that moment that Ali's world came crashing down around her, along with the fragments of her own reality. Bodies were hunched over her father's and their heads seemed to be sinking and rising into his body; seemingly eating his organs and only coming up for air.

That night, Alice Bell was made an orphan and suddenly everything in her life no longer made sense.

She moves in with her grandma and grandad and is forced to change school; that makes her life even stranger. One boy, one of the apparent bad ones, she feels that she has a strange connection with. She is physically attracted to him. his handsome face, rippling body, scars. Oh and the strange visions that the two are sharing each time they make eye contact for the first time that day.

Time passes and she keeps seeing these strange visions as well as these creatures that seem to be regularly appearing near her house; almost stalking her. After finally approaching Cole - her vision bad boy - and his fellow bad boy friends, Ali is able to finally understand what she sees and the war that she is about to enter.

They are the strange, horrifying creatures that are only really mentioned in horror stories and films from years ago. But they are real, as real as the nose on Alice's face. Alice is about to fight ....

Zombies.

My Thoughts:

This is a series that I really wanted to read for ages, but haven't had the opportunity to read it because I couldn't find any of in any book shop in the whole of England!!!!!! Okay, maybe I'm over exaggerating a tiny bit I have good reason too, I couldn't find them anywhere! But then I was in a shop and the three books were available for £5. Not £5 each. Oh no, 3 for £5!!!!!!! EKKKKKK! And my dad brought them for me! I was out competing and he said that since I was doing well them he would buy them for me!!!! YES!

I've heard a lot of good things about this book, so I was excited to read it. And I have to say it did not disappoint.

Currently I am loving the modern fairytales, or the retelling of classic fairy tales. I've read quite a few lately (check out my reviews page if you want to check them out) and this book really kept up the rest … mostly.

There were some things in the book that I actually found quite boring. Moments when I really didn't connect with any of the characters. * And that really really annoyed me because the book was so good, but I found myself unable to read it for long periods of time because it bored me. **

Ali was a good character, I pitied her and I fell in love with Cole too. Though he did piss me off at times .... sorry about my French.

And the ending, I'm not going to release any spoilers but I have to say that I was both screaming and sobbing. Yep, it was one of those endings! I really can't go into too much detail because I will spoil everything ... it is one of these books .... Sorry, but I don't want to spoil anything for you.

Rating:

Although I did enjoy this book, there were moments that I really annoyed me and I found them fairly boring. And that is why I am giving this book ****

Review | Cinder, by Marissa Meyer

19:59
What You Need To Know:

Title: Cinder
Author: Marissa Meyer
Number of Pages: 387
Genres: Young Adult, Romance, Science Fiction, Dystopian,
Publisher: Macmillan Publishers
Published: 3rd January 2012

The Plot:

Cinder is a retelling of a classic fairy tale; a fairy tale we all know well. Cinderella who lives with her evil stepmother and ugly stepsisters. Forced to be a maid in her father's household. Given a chance to go the ball by her fairy godmother. Falls in love with the prince. Becomes a princess. We all know the story, right? Right!

Well, this is loosely based on that … and when I say loosely, I mean loosely!

Meet Cinder, a mechanic, an unloved adopted child … oh and she's a cyborg. Cinder lives in New Beijing with her step mother and two stepsisters. One of her sisters is lovely, her name is Peony, whilst the other is as bitter as her step mother.

In this world that they live in a disease runs rampant and all who get it die; they have no chance of survival. It's know as the blue plague and as soon as someone gets it then they are doomed. That's what happens to Peony, and everyone blames Cinder because of it; they were together at the time and an outbreak had occurred only a few hours before near where Cinder had been so it was obviously her fault!

Out of anger, Cinder's stepmother volunteers Cinder to undertake treatment that may help discover a cure for the disease. There she meets Doctor Erland and she discovers the first of many interesting things about herself; she's immune!

Not only that but she has Prince Kai to worry about! Every single girl is in love with him; including Cinder by the looks of things. Initially she was only meant to fix his droid. But as time goes on, and their encounters get more frequent, she discovers that perhaps she might have feelings for him.

And to make matters worse, the queen of the Lunars has a plan for world domination - though she claims that she really wants peace - and to complete this she has to marry Prince Kai. Something always has to get in the way of love in these stories; doesn't it.

Cinder is forced to fight not only her new found emotions for Prince Kai but also her fears towards her recently discovered identity. All of this she has to battle to ensure that Kai is safe so she has to do one thing, the one thing she really doesn't want to do. Cinder has to go to the ball.

My Thoughts:

As you can likely tell from the fairly long description of the book, I really enjoyed this. Not an enjoy like, oh it was fairly good, but an enjoy like 'I WANT TO FINISH IT BUT NO AND UGH!' But I'll go into detail as to why soon.

When I was in the bookshop like three weeks ago, I really didn't know whether i'd like that book. Everyone on booktube and bookstagram person seems to love this series and I was like ... maybe ... I don't know if I'll like it; not really sure about a futuristic retelling of Cinderella. But I thought, hey ho, who gives a damn! I fancied a new book and everyone was giving this amazing views, so I bought it.

I have to say that I'm so glad I did; it was so amazing! But I'll get on to that later.

I really enjoyed Marissa Meyer's writing style. It was such a refreshing style. It wasn't too in depth so it didn't complicate the book (unlike my previous read which was written a bit like a dissertation). However, it was detailed as well. I know that that contradicts itself in a way but it is true. In a fairly unique way Meyer explains her world without going into unnecessary detail.

The book instantly hooked me. There was something about the opening quote that really really hooked me. I'm going to mention it to you now, because it really is amazing: 'Even in the future the story begins with Once Upon a Time'. I love that quote. To me it was that that really hooked me. It seemed to be the perfect way to initially grip a reader.

From then on, I knew that I would like the book. I literally fell in love with Prince Kai and I really felt sorry for everything that happened to Cinder.

I have to say that I did predict the overall outcome at the end of the book when it was vaguely mentioned. But how that occurred I couldn't really guess. Yes I did sort of figure that out near the end but I didn't straight away, which is good! I forgive the above facts because the book was just so blooming amazing!!!!!!!

Review:

Yes, there were tiny faults. Like how predicable the final was for me. But the rest I didn't see coming, at all. And the writing was just so nice. I really really loved reading this book. And because of that I have to give this *****
